Anti-NMDAR encephalitis (NMDARE) is an enigmatic autoimmune disease caused by antibodies targeting the GluN1 subunit of NMDARs and leads to long-term cognitive deficits in the majority of cases and can be fatal in some patients. One of the most common, but poorly understood aspects of NMDARE, are the long-term neurological deficits for which there are currently no available treatments. I will use a state-of-the-art human pluripotent stem cell-based tri-culture system to systematically investigate the cell-nonautonomous disease mechanisms that drive chronic inflammation in NMDARE.
